MRI Screening for Women at High Risk of Breast Cancer<\/p>\n
A woman with a family history of breast cancer often lives
\n
\n under a cloud of anxious uncertainty, wondering if the
\n
\n disease that affected her mother, sister, or other
\n
\n first-degree relative may strike her as well. Fortunately,
\n
\n a number of studies suggest that women at high risk for
\n
\n developing breast cancer may benefit from magnetic
\n
\n resonance imaging (MRI) screening, providing these women
\n
\n with a new option they can use to help address their
\n
\n concerns.<\/p>\n

The New York Yankees and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer

\n Center have joined together to support the Center’s
\n
\n programs in pediatric patient care, research, and
\n
\n education by creating the New York Yankees Universe fund.<\/p>\n

\nPediatric Patient Story – Perry Zimmerman<\/p>\n
To meet Perry Zimmerman, you would think you’re meeting a
\n
\n typical, albeit cute and precocious, five-year-old. What
\n
\n you wouldn’t know was that Perry has faced and conquered
\n
\n more life-threatening obstacles in her short life than
\n
\n most people could even begin to imagine. Born with a rare
\n
\n cancer of the eye known as retinoblastoma that spread to
\n
\n her brain, Perry successfully fought through five cycles
\n
\n of chemotherapy and one stem cell transplant at Memorial
\n
\n Sloan-Kettering to overcome the cancer. After such an
\n
\n arduous journey made by such a little girl, it is
\n
\n understandable that her parents, Larry and Anne Zimmerman,
\n
\n think of her as their little miracle.<\/p>\n

\nAn Interview with Kathleen M. Foley<\/p>\n
Memorial Sloan-Kettering neurologist Kathleen M. Foley
\n
\n focuses on the assessment and treatment of pain in cancer
\n
\n patients, as well as on developing policies for pain and
\n
\n palliative care worldwide. She is the incumbent of The
\n
\n Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Chair
\n
\n and former Chief of the Pain and Palliative Care Service.
\n
\n Dr. Foley chairs the International Association for Hospice
\n
\n and Palliative Care and is a member of the Institute of
\n
\n Medicine of the National Academies.<\/p>\n

\nProtein Regulates Quiescent Blood Stem Cells That Are Linked
\n
\nto Enhanced Recovery from Radiation and Chemotherapy<\/p>\n
Memorial Sloan-Kettering scientists and colleagues have
\n
\n uncovered new information about what orchestrates the
\n
\n complex balance between blood stem cells and mature blood
\n
\n cells, a relationship that is often disrupted in leukemia.
\n
\n The results, published in the March issue of Cancer Cell,
\n
\n will lead to a better understanding of the behavior of
\n
\n leukemic cells and may have vital clinical applications
\n
\n for patients recovering from chemotherapy, radiation
\n
\n therapy, or bone marrow transplantation.<\/p>\n

\nInvestigators Show How Key Growth Factor Influences Immune
\n
\nSystem<\/p>\n
Memorial Sloan-Kettering investigators Joan Massagu\u00c3\u00bd and
\n
\n Dori A. Thomas have published a paper showing how the
\n
\n protein called transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-\u00c3\u00bd)
\n
\n allows tumor cells to escape killing by the immune system.
\n
\n TGF-\u00c3\u00bd has been a well-studied cellular protein in cancer
\n
\n research because it can act as either an inhibitor or a
\n
\n promoter of cell growth.<\/p>\n
