Digital vs. Conventional Film Mammography for Breast Cancer
\n
\nScreening<\/p>\n
From our cameras to our televisions, we are now living in
\n
\n an undeniably digital age. Since the trend has been
\n
\n extended into breast cancer screening, investigators
\n
\n conducted a study to test the accuracy of digital
\n
\n mammography versus standard film mammography. While
\n
\n finding no significant difference between the two
\n
\n techniques when applied to the general population and for
\n
\n most women over 50, the study did show that digital
\n
\n mammograms detected more tumors in three specific groups:
\n
\n women under 50, women with dense breasts, and women not
\n
\n yet in menopause.<\/p>\n

Welcoming hundreds of patients and families to a program

\n and reception marking National Survivorship Day on June 14
\n
\n at the Rockefeller Research Laboratories Auditorium,
\n
\n Memorial Sloan-Kettering Physician-in-Chief Robert E.
\n
\n Wittes called the event „a celebration both of wonder and,
\n
\n for many, the ongoing challenge of being a cancer
\n
\n survivor.“<\/p>\n

\nLance Armstrong Foundation Pledges $1 Million for New and

\nOngoing Cancer Survivorship Programs<\/p>\n
In recognition of Memorial Sloan-Kettering’s longstanding

\n commitment to the care of cancer patients in the

\n post-treatment period, the Lance Armstrong Foundation has
\n
\n named Memorial Sloan-Kettering a Center of Excellence in
\n
\n Cancer Survivorship and has pledged $1 million over five
\n
\n years to support Sloan-Kettering’s efforts to provide the
\n
\n best possible care for cancer survivors.<\/p>\n

\nIncreased Ovarian Cancer Risk Not Found in Women with Breast
\n
\nCancer Family History<\/p>\n
Women with a strong family history of breast cancer but
\n
\n who don’t have breast cancer genetic mutations can now be
\n
\n reassured that they are not at increased risk for ovarian
\n
\n cancer, according to a new study by researchers at
\n
\n Memorial Sloan-Kettering.<\/p>\n

\nStudy Finds Patients with Melanoma Are at Increased Risk for
\n
\nNew Tumors<\/p>\n
Memorial Sloan-Kettering researchers have found that
\n
\n melanoma patients with a family history of melanoma and\/or
\n
\n dysplastic nevi (abnormal moles) are at high risk of
\n
\n developing multiple primary melanomas. The results of this
\n
\n study emphasize the importance of intensive dermatologic
\n
\n screenings for this population to identify melanoma at its
\n
\n earliest stage.<\/p>\n

\nNew Potential Antibiotic Inhibits Bacterial Growth<\/p>\n
Memorial Sloan-Kettering and Cornell University
\n
\n researchers have synthesized a molecule impeding the
\n
\n growth of two harmful bacteria: M. tuberculosis, estimated
\n
\n to infect one-third of the world’s population, and Y.
\n
\n pestis, the cause of pneumonic and bubonic plague. This is
\n
\n the first agent that effectively targets these pathogens
\n
\n by blocking their ability to synthesize siderophores,
\n
\n compounds required for those bacteria to grow and cause
\n
\n disease.<\/p>\n
