Afghanistan was a relatively prosperous country before Soviet Union & US decided to fight a war over that land. If US had pumped funds into that country right after the Soviets left and built the country that they helped to destroy, the story would have been very different. There would not have been any sanctuaries for Al-Quaida in that country, there would not have been any 9/11.

America must learn to build in addition to its already perfectly honed skill of destruction. Otherwise there will be more disasters to follow.

America won the war against the Soviets by getting help from Pakistan and the only solution now is to give some operational authority to Pakistan to exert their influence and Afghanistan can still be rescued.

Obama needs to stop trying to be too cute by half and get all US troops and contractors out of Iraq and Afghanistan — immediately, tempered only by full safety for our troops. He needs to remember the lessons of Vietnam — even when we were much wealthier than we are now, we can’t do guns and butter and trading one lackey government for another accomplishes nothing but more dead and maimed Afghans and Americans.

LBJ’s Great Society could have worked if the resources he wasted on the war instead went into Great Society programs. We could have gotten free, universal, single payer health care then and saved our auto industry in the 60s from having to pay for auto workers‘ health care, making them competitive with the foreign automakers who didn’t have to pay for their employees‘ health care because their governments paid for it. But Vietnam ruined it all and we couldn’t afford both even then.

Now Obama has the opportunity to bring universal health care, quality, affordable education for all, a green economy, a rebuilding of our infrastructure, high-speed commuter rail, etc. But he has to give up his wars and convert the resources devoted to those stupid, America-weakening, anti-American, criminal wars to his economic program and eliminating international poverty and disease.

This is American democracy at work folks, we smash the countries back to the stone age and pick the leaders

We don’t change Arab rulers who will not allow democracy and yes the 9/11 terrorists were Saudi’s..

If democracy throws up leaders we don’t pick like in Gaza we ignore them and let our Yehudi buddies starve them into submission.

Do the words Vietnam mean anything to anybody.

I seem to remember the United States lost confidence in the puppet they had and replaced him with a coup. The name Diem mean anything?

How did that turn out?

It occurs to me that if we had ever been interested in anything other than scoring bogus points in the „Cold War, we probably should have supported the Russians and their Afghan allies.

They were probably the best hope for modernizing that country. And relieving it’s poverty. I am afraid the modernization people have all been killed or driven out.

And Afghans have been at war for nearly 30 years. With nothing to show for it but death and despair. And a huge opium crop of course.

The Afghan people deserve better.

This is nothing new …………. „Outsiders“ have been „planting“ leaders in 3rd world countries for decades.

They find someone who is easy to „order around“ and who they can control, and then do whatever it takes to ensure that person is elected. ……………. Remember Aristide in Haiti?

In fact ALL of the now sitting Caribbean leaders who were elected in the last 2 years are in place with the same kind of „outside help“………… Surprisingly (or not) ALL of these leaders gave „extra“ glowing praises to the Bush administration just hours after they were elected, as if they were saying „thank you for all the election campaign help“.

But once one of these leaders deviate from the „script“, they are summarily ousted by the same „outsiders“ who got them elected in the first place……… These „planted“ leaders are easily expendable.

If one knows anything about Afghanistan, it is this: it cannot be governed by a strong central government. That is not the right model for Afghanistan.

I was thinking about that, you might be right. We have to realize that Afghanistan has not had anything resembling a government since the 1970’s. That’s an entire generation ago. People in their 30’s who have known nothing but chaos and various puppets.

I agree that the central government system probably cannot work in the immediate future. Perhaps it can over time. Afghans are too used to having regional governments run by warlords. Compoud that with the fact that many peoples loyalties can be bought and sold, simply for the fact that they have no real national identity or sense of belonging to something greater. They identify most often with their regional or ethnic/tribal group.

Look for example at the most recent history. Everyone knows the Russians failed and pulled out. The puppet government they left behind also failed and was overthrown 3 years later by the people who would become the northern alliance. They were in turn overthrown just a few years later by the Taleban. And so it goes. The reason why we, and the northern alliance, had success early on is because we paid to play. We bought loyalties and drove the Taleban from power.

why do you use the phrase:-„Afghans are too used to having regional governments run by warlords.“-

Afghanistan is essentially organized along tribal/social heirarchies, diffusely governed, each almost autonomously by local leaders who usually are either directly or indirectly connected to religious leaders. These social/tribal units occupy traditional lands, some boundaries of which may vary seasonally. It lacks insight to categorically brand local Afghani leaders as „warlords“ and traditional lands as „regions“-as though there might be a direct parallelism to political divisions such as our „States“…rather than attempting to force Afghanistan into a (secular) government modeled on the United States system of government, the problem of bringing Afghanistan into the 21st century must first establish some form of a functioning Federation of these diffuse locally governed units for the purposes of presenting a unified face and voice in the world of nations as well as for dealing with today’s globally interconnected civilization with its associated problems,

Occupation is the WRONG model. In any of its masks.

If anyone knows anything about Afghanistan, it is this: it can NOT be occupied.

Wrap it up in military pragmatism, pipeline politics, imperialism, avenging the 911 attacks (most loathsome excuse), sending girls to school, bringing democracy, freedom or ice cream…..it is all triangulating BS designed to fool the American people.

This horrible immoral occupation of Afghanistan was wrong under the thug Bush, and it is wrong under President Obama. Ending it is the only humane option.

I agree. And it is not an occupation in Afgahnistan. In fact, even if we wanted occupation, we wouldn’t succeed. Afghanistan is not Iraq.

The President has to define a limited objective and mission in Afghanistan: cause as much damage to al Qaeda in, say, a year, then end the military operation. Following that, all actions must be aimed at preventing resurgence of al Qaeda like groups. And that can be accomplished only through economic/development aid to Afghanistan and helping them develop a viable political structure.

I’d like to know who the goofball is that is behind this bizarre strategy. This is exactly how you screw up a country and magnify the problems 100 fold. Just ask GW Bush about doing this very thing in Iraq. We are doomed to failure in Afghanistan I see.

And why goofballs call Karzai a Bush pick is beyond me. Bush didn’t have anything to do with it. It was the loya jirga that I recalled selected the process by which Karzai ended up President. He was Pashtun ande was also a member of the United Front: Northern Alliance working with such notable leaders as Abdul Hak, General Rasheed Dostum and someone I admire a great deal, Ahmad Shah Masood. They won the war that drove the Taleban out of power once and for all. Sure, they had our backing, but they did all the dirty work on the ground and deserved to enjoy the spoils as the victors.

And whoever the idiot is that wants the Taleban to have a presence in the Afghan government needs to be fired, impeached or shot for treason. All I can say is, OVER MY DEAD BODY and those of thousands of other Americans who did serve over there to drive them out of power. Some gave all, all gave some. We need to honor that and not spit on their graves, which is exactly what would happen if we put the Taleban back in charge.

Do not over assume that the Iraq mission is a success, yet b/c they still have US troops on the ground. Take about „succcess“ after US withdrawal then, I will agree with you!

Who put the Taliban in power in the 90s?

The whole point of my post in the mention of Iraq is that is has been a colossal failure. GW Bush tried the same thing in Iraq, it failed. There has been no success.

„That is not their job,“ the Afghan president said. „Afghanistan will never be a puppet state.“

——-

LOL.

So says the puppet.

The West must ensure that any economic/development aid is used for the intended purpose of improving the lives of Afghans – creating jobs, building infrastructure, running schools and hospitals.

Karzai, a hand-picked tool of the NeoCons has been a dismal failure.

If not „appointing“ a Prime Minister, the West must insist on having a reliable structure and a leader in place to ensure that foreign aid is not wasted or used counterproductively.

The US?

Funny how the really bad stuff like this used to be headlined as „Bush does…..“

Was President Obama in on this? Are we allowed to be alarmed at overt manipulation of a puppet dictator who is fed up with selling out his country to the occupying forces? Because Kharzai has dared to criticize us for our indiscriminate bombing raids which kill way too many civilians, he is to be replaced.

This policy is the Obama doctrine.

How can any self respecting pacifist or liberal stand idly by while this Republican style regime change goes forward under President Obama?

I guess you haven’t been paying attention.

„Democracy“ is when a foreign country elects a government that does what we want.

When they elect a government that doesn’t, that isn’t democracy. And the citizens of that country are therefore bad people.

It’s all very logically consistent. (Sadly);.
